The multi-disciplinary Knight team will work with local officials to carry out a community design
workshop focused on a specific neighborhood or area where there is a commitment to carry out a
development or redevelopment initiative. The definition and scope of the initiative will be defined by the
local context and could be oriented towards producing a variety of outcomes including a community
visioning plan, a specific area plan, a more focused site plan, urban design guidelines, an overlay district,
and an urban code that defines a more specific typology of buildings, streets, and public spaces. In
general, the more specific the neighborhood or area involved and the more specific the goals and desired
outcomes, the better.

We are looking for situations with the strongest potential for implementation and with strong support
from elected officials, neighborhood groups, coalitions and private development interests. There must be
a local agency with personnel clearly designated to help plan and coordinate events, including the
assembly of necessary maps, documents and materials, securing meeting space for design workshops and
public meetings, coordination with local agencies and departments, providing mailing lists, media
coordination, and general assistance. This could be done on a part-time, as-needed basis in the months
leading up to the event, but will require a full time commitment for 7-10 days that will include time
before, during and after the charrette. The Knight Program will hire a professional charrette planner who
will coordinate between local contacts and the Knight team.

The Knight Charrette is conducted as a community service for Knight Communities, providing talent and
resources that typically cost communities tens or hundreds of thousands of dollars. As a measure of local
commitment, we ask that the local community contribute $5,000 that the Knight Program will use to fund
some visible civic improvement (e.g., trees, landscaping, a statue or fountain, playground equipment) to
inaugurate the implementation of the plan or vision produced during the charrette.

Please work with your local Knight Fellow to investigate possibilities for hosting the Knight Charrette in
your community. If you feel that you have a "charrette ready" project and local commitment for carrying
it out, have your Knight Fellow arrange for a telephone interview with the Knight Program. This
interview may also be followed up with a site visit by a small Knight Program team.

Thank you for your interest and we look forward to hearing from you.

Sincerely,

Charles C.
