Memo

From:

Thomas Paschke, City Planner
John Loftus, Fire MarS'"1ll;jd^' ^
I ~/ J----
,

To:

cc:

Date:

January 3, 2003
1910 West County Road C

Re:

Again, I apologize for being unable to attend the ORC meeting this week. I hope it does
not cause any hardship to the other members of the committee as it has apparently in
the past however I was scheduled for the training I am attending prior to the
announcement of the meeting.

I do have some comments however regarding the propose redevelopment of this site.

1. As I mentioned previously, I have some concerns regarding the lack of adequate
water supplies provided to and within the site. Currently, the entire site is served
with a single dead end 8 inch water main which ends at the adjacent property to
the West. Although the proposed extension of an 8 inch main to the rear of the
property is a great improvement, I am not convinced that this single, dead ended
main will provide adequate fire protection to the site. Factoring the use of the
proposed buildings and construction type, a minimum flow of 1,500 gallons per
minute would be required. This may be possible with the proposed mains but
would have to be proven by a fire protection engineer.

2. Fire Hydrant placement. A fire hydrant is required to be placed 50 feet to 60 feet
from the fire department connection on the buildings. Additionally, fire hydrants
must be provided so that no portion of the exterior walls are more that 150 feet
from a hydrant. These requirements would dictate more hydrants than what are
currently proposed.

3. I would like to propose that, in the interest of future development, the water
mains on this site and also on the adjacent sites be looped at or near the rear
portions of these properties. At the very least, it would be advisable to require
