Human Rights Commission Minutes <br />January 21, 2015 – Draft Minutes <br />Page 6 of 8 <br />It was the consensus of the Commission to have Commissioner Singleton propose to the League <br />224 <br />of MN Human Rights they apply for grants on behalf of the Commission and allocate funds if <br />225 <br />granted. <br />226 <br />227 <br />New Business <br />228 <br />229 <br />a.Report on Recent Community Events/Invite to Upcoming Events <br />230 <br />231 <br />Ms. Collins stated the Naturalization Ceremony would be held April 15. <br />232 <br />233 <br />Commissioner Singleton stated he had attended a Maplewood Human Rights meeting and they <br />234 <br />had a Community Police/Citizen Forum for Police Accountability. The community was given an <br />235 <br />opportunity to write down their questions for the panel. He suggested the Commission consider <br />236 <br />partnering with Maplewood and host a similar event. <br />237 <br />238 <br />Chair Groff asked Commissioner Singleton to provide additional information for the <br />239 <br />Commission to review. He also suggested he talk with the Police Chief to see if he would be <br />240 <br />interested in doing something together. <br />241 <br />242 <br />Commissioner Thao stated she had attended a Community Conversation hosted by the Suburban <br />243 <br />Ramsey Family Collaborative. There had been over 200 attendees and the organization would <br />244 <br />be hosting four (4) other similar events. She encouraged Commissioners to attend the event. <br />245 <br />246 <br />Chair Groff stated there would be a Discussion on Sex Trafficking at the Library on February 4 <br />247 <br />at 7:00 p.m. <br />248 <br />249 <br />b.Commission Start Time <br />250 <br />251 <br />Commissioner Carey requested the Commission consider rescheduling the start time for <br />252 <br />Commission meetings to 6:00 p.m. This is when the Council starts their meeting <br />253 <br />254 <br />Commissioner Singleton moved and Commissioner Carey seconded a motion to amend the <br />255 <br />start time for the Human Rights Commission meetings to 6:00 p.m. The motion passed: 6- <br />256 <br />ayes; 1-nay (Slade). <br />257 <br />258 <br />c.Creation of HRC Award Committee <br />259 <br />260 <br />Chair Groff asked what the responsibilities would be for the HRC Award Committee. <br />261 <br />262 <br />Commissioner Bachhuber stated the application for the HRC Award is currently on the City’s <br />263 <br />website. The three (3) person Committee would review the on-line application and make any <br />264 <br />necessary changes, review the applications received by the deadline, which is April 1, and <br />265 <br />determine a recipient. The winner should be determined within 6-8 weeks of the application <br />266 <br />deadline and the award would be presented at a City Council meeting. She recommended the <br />267 <br />Commissioners promote the award and tell other Commissioners about it. <br />268 <br /> <br />
