FEBRUARY 12, 2015 COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT COMMISSION AGENDA ITEM #
7 A 2: HOSTING A LOCAL CONFERENCE ON COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT
A

On Fri, Jan 30, 2015 at 1:17 PM, Theresa Gardella <theresagardella@gmail.com> wrote:
Hi Gary and Scot
Des, Kathy and I met on Tuesday to discuss ways to move the “Community
Engagement Conference/Learning Opportunity” plan forward. As we were talking and sharing
ideas, we realized we needed a lot more information before we could offer a valuable learning
opportunity to others. For example, what do staff, council members, etc. know about community
and civic engagement, and what would they like to learn more about? What are Roseville’s
current efforts at engaging its citizens? Where are the shining examples (or at least ones we can
learn from) around the Twin Cities that we could connect with and learn from?
With that in mind, we are proposing postponing the “Community Engagement
Conference/Learning Opportunity” and using 2015 as a time to gather information and develop a
more thoughtful and valuable plan. Our work in 2015 would include:
INTERVIEWS: WHAT DO YOU KNOW, WHAT DO YOU WANT TO LEARN?
(this list is only preliminary – we would rely on the CE Commission’s input):
 Roseville city staff, including City Manager, Volunteer Coordinator, Department Heads
 Roseville City Council: we could craft a survey for them (more efficient), or set up short
interview with a few key members, including the Mayor.
 Key Roseville City Commissioners
RESEARCH: WHAT AND WHO IS OUT THERE DOING STRONG COMMUNITY
AND CIVIC
ENGAGEMENT
 Compile a list of resources around “best practices”
 Research could generate additional interviews with key individuals
We believe offering learning opportunities around community and civic engagement is important
and can be very valuable to our work and other’s work. However, we also know that the
learning opportunity(ies) could take many forms and/or multiple forms with different audiences
at different times with different content. Making it worthwhile, effective and valuable is our
priority.
Let us know your thoughts.
Theresa
