FEBRUARY 12, 2015 COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT COMMISSION AGENDA ITEM #
7 A 2: HOSTING A LOCAL CONFERENCE ON COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT
A

On Friday January 30th, Scott Becker responded
I think this is a decent plan.

However, I wonder if we should try to get some input ASAP from other cities who
have done community/civic engagement and learn from their successes and
mistakes. This could be done, for example, by soliciting a representative to just
come talk to us at one of our meetings. We could, for example, invite a
representative from Edina to talk about their civic engagement module roll-out. Or
invite the chair of a CEC in another city to come to our meeting to talk about how
they do it. Stuff like that seems doable in 2015 and it can be less formal than an
"event".

My two cents,
Scot.

On Friday, January 30th, Gary Grefenberg also responded, unaware of Becker’s
response:

Theresa:

I had earlier added this to the agenda based upon Scot’s reminder e-mail of January 28th. Just this
morning I spoke with him and suggested that since you were not going to be with us at our next
Commission meeting that we postpone discussion to our next session in March. So I really appreciated
your following through with a written proposal.

This report will be on the agenda and included in the meeting packet, but please be aware that we may
not have much time for it, because of other time-sensitive items, as well as the dialogue with the
Minnesota Advocates for Human Rights on Civic Engagement and the Immigrant
Community. Depending on how much time you have, we can continue the discussion to March.

My immediate response to the report is that it is a great beginning, but I think you should include in
your target groups existing Community Engagement groups such as the Lake McCarron’s and Twin Lakes
Neighborhood Associations, and the Gavel Club. I think from our perspective they are as important if
not more so than Department Heads, with the major exception of Lonnie Brooke and the Parks
Department. (As of this time they are the only department doing community engagement focusing on
parks.) I ‘d also include Corey Yunke, Community Liaison for the Police Department. I can provide
contact info if you wish, and will raise these suggestions at the meeting.

I’d also broaden your research search to other Twin Cities suburbs, especially inner-ring, who have staff
or groups similar to ours, such as the Community Engagement Initiative in Brooklyn Park and Edina’s
community engagement efforts (search both Volunteer and Speak Up).
