In this way, the owner takes much of the risk of off-season
[ often is more successful than fall
conifers. Even there is no difference in there can be
differences in

13. soil for trees and shrubs. Fertile friable loam a
liberal amount of humus and capable of sustaining vigorous plant and
complying with MNDOT specifications 3877 Type B. Select top soil mixture
shall be free of hard-pack subsoil, stones, chemicals, noxious weeds etc.
Soil moisture shall have a between 6.1 and 7.5 Incorporate [number not
readable} part peat moss for three parts soil (specify type of peat moss)
and 10-10-10- fertilizer at the rate of 3 pounds per cubic yard. In
planting beds incorporate this mixture throughout the entire bed by
rototilling the top 12 of soil.
[Need to clarify just where and to what depth this soil mixture is to be
use was used when planting trees.. As you know good soil is required over a
much wider area than occurs in the planting hole or ball. }
[ What soil amelioration if any is to be used in regard to sod?}
[Given that the soil has a high clay content, and might be packed tight
during berm formation, I would recommend that deep scarifying (2 feet)
before adding and in the top soil.

14.Planting soil for perennial beds.

15. Watering
Maintain a watering schedule which will thoroughly water all plants once a
week. In extremel hot dry weather, water more often as required by
indication of heat stress such as wilting leaves. Check moisture under
mulch prior to watering to determine needs. Contractor shall make the
necessary arrangements for water. (As you know, overwatering can be
lethal in these conditions where surrounding clay acts as an impremeable
flower pot. Will the criteria for testing these areas be specified?)
Incidentally, the Club told us that the berm was to have automatic
irrigation, but i do not know if they will do so.

16. Antidescicants. Use anti-dessicant ( Wilt-pruf or approved equal) on
deciduous plants moved in leaf and for evergreens moved anytime. Apply as
per manufacturers instructions. All evergreens shall be sprayed in late
fall for winter protection during warranty period.. My own research and
that of others in the 70's suggested that anti-desiccants can do more harm
than good with some conifers. Has more recent work found it to be helpful
with conifers?

17. Mulch. Shredded hardwood mulch clean and free of weeds and other
deleterious material in all mass planting beds and for trees. Deliver
mulch on day of installation. Use 4" for trees, 3" for shrub beds and 2"
for perennial ground cover beds unless otherwise directed. [ Consider
requiring that for evergreen trees, mulch should be spread from trunk to 2
feet beyond drip line. This protects the trees against mower blight as

2
