Deer Population <br />Responses to questions at the Jan/Feb. 2015 Parks & Recreation Commission <br />meeting <br />1. If there was a hunt in Roseville, what areas would be recommended? <br />® Ramsey County and the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) and/or the <br />Minnesota Bow Hunters Resource Base (MBRB) would provide a site review and work <br />with us on recommended areas. <br />® Areas recommended would include the highly populated areas per the last aerial count or <br />where they feel the deer concentration is high. <br />o USDA - most likely would be the areas by Lake Owasso <br />o MBRB -most likely would include larger areas such as Reservoir Woods and the <br />area by Lake Josephine. <br />2. What areas from the survey make up the .77 square miles of habitat? <br />o The yellow highlighted areas make up the .77 square miles of deer habitat. Wetland and <br />park areas are typically deer areas of choice. <br />3. Have there been any bad incidents as a result of a hunt? <br />® None known <br />4. Has there ever been any pro -activist demonstrations as a result of a hunt? <br />O No <br />® Minimal opposition with no organized demonstration efforts - <br />5. What types of guns are used during a shoot? <br />Rifle <br />Both rim fire .22 caliber suppressed (silenced) rifles and center fire .223 and .308 caliber <br />suppressed (silenced) rifles with the .223 being the most commonly used. Type depends <br />on the site at where they are conducting control and at what distance they'll be shooting <br />at <br />® The USDA is pennitted to use silencers <br />Bows <br />C Standard bow and arrows are used <br />• Cross bows are allowed for those that are 70 and older and/or are physically disabled <br />6. Why does it cost more to kill the deer with a rifle than with a bow and arrow? <br />® Because of planning, implementation, and harvesting of animal when taken by sharp <br />shooting- you are paying for the professional to do a duty. Are there metrics or evidence of the effectiveness of a feeding ban surrounding cities? <br />Ma lewood <br />They did not analyze what effect the feeding ban would have on the deer, they assume <br />the deer find food from residents plantings and/or bird feeders even with a feeding ban. <br />North Oaks <br />It was 25 yrs ago when the feeding ordinance was written, no studies have been <br />conducted .
