Department Approval
:i

REQUEST FOR COUNCIL ACTION
Date: August 17, 2015
Item No.: 15.b
City Manager Approval
Item Description: Discuss the Use of the Former Fairview Ave. Fire Station
BACKGROUND
The former Fairview Ave. Fire Station, located at 2501 Fairview Ave., is currently used by the City for
storage of material and equipment. In addition, the Roseville Historical Society uses the facility for
storage of their historical materials. A small office space within the building is also used by the
Roseville Fire Relief Association for file storage. A larger open area is used occasionally for Parlc and
Recreation staff as a work space to prepare for events. Police officers also occasionally use the
building as a place to take a lunch break.
The building itself has a footprint of about 6,000 square feet and was constructed in 1966 but has not
been used as a fire station for many years. The overall parcel is 1.73 acres. However the rear of the
parcel contains the City water tower. The site also has substantial public and private infrastructure
easements south of the building. Factoring out the area need for the water tower, there is approximately
0.85 acres of remaining land.
Options for consideration
The City Council has recently expressed an interest in talking about the future use of the Fairview Fire
Station property. Staff has identified several options for the City Council to consider regarding the
future use of the property.
1) Put the property on the market for sale for redevelopment into a business/commercial use.
2) Repurpose the building/property for another municipal use (e.g. license center, new city storage
facility, green space).
3) Repurpose the building/property for use by the Roseville Historical Society
4) Keep the building and property as is.
At the meeting, staff will discuss each option in greater detail and will be looking for direction from the
City Council on how to proceed.
Repurposing the building as described in options 1-3, will necessitate a discussion about where to store
the equipment and material currently stored in the building. This thought coincides well with recent the
staff discussion of finding centralized permanent storage space for City departments. With the
upcoming construction of Twin Lakes Parkway and the subsequent teardown of the storage garage
within the right-of-way, the City will need to find a new storage site. Public Works and Parks and
Recreation currently use that building for storage. In addition, the Roseville Historical Society
currently offices out the same building.
