The 340 kv emergency generator would be located directly behind and connected to the
2.4
existing NSP transformer and new transfer unit. The emergency generator is approximately
16 feet long by feet wide and stands approximately feet tall. As a self-contained
emergency generator it is designed with a 600 gallon fuel storage unit and a 900 gallon safety
sub-tank for capturing fuel in the unlikely event of a leak or rupture. This emergency
generator, with its 600 gallon diesel fuel capacity, could run up to 54 hours. The walls of the
generator unit are designed with sound absorption material that are inches thick and
were re-engineered to reduce noise reverberation by 50%. The generator will create 73
decibels of sound when operating at full capacity. Because it is emergency equipment noise
regulations do not apply. The generator unit will be setback a minimum of six feet from all
existing exterior walls to meet the fire code spacing requirement. No detached outdoor fuel
storage tank will be installed.
The self-contained emergency generator shell will be painted white to match the building and
2.5
will appear to be an attachment to the building.
2.6In conjunction with this request, the following has been provided for review and
consideration:
project narrative
l
existing conditions/site plan
l
emergency generator diagrams
l
transfer unit and generator elevations
l
photos of proposed location
l
Staff Comment And Findings
3.0
3.1Because of the nature of the residents and their dependence on uninterrupted electrical
service, an emergency generator can be defined as on essential emergency service.
3.2The proposed emergency generator is self-contained, including the fuel storage cell.
3.3The City Code does not specifically address self-contained emergency electrical generators.
3.4Due to the low flammability of diesel fuel the Fire Marshal prefers a diesel fuel operated
emergency generator as opposed to one operated by natural gas or liquid petroleum.
Recommendation
4.0Staff
4.1The staff recommends approval of the request by Estates for a permit to allow
installation of an emergency generator with a self-contained fuel storage cell within the front
yard of property located at 2750 Victoria Street North.
PF3 106 RCA Page 2 of 3
