Request For Council Action
Date:
Item No:
Agenda Section:
Manager Reviewed:
Department Approval:
Consent Agenda
Request by Police Department for approval of The Juvenile
Item Description:
Accountability Incentive Block Grant (JAIBG) funding
The
(JAIBG) was created by Congress in 1997 to promote
reform within the Juvenile Justice System. The program was designed to
encourage cities to try new ideas to prevent juvenile delinquency. The acceptance
of this grant would allow the department to form a ?Cops Kids? Mentoring
Program. Volunteer officers would be assigned to a middle school, at risk youths
would be identified by the School System, and Officers would then work with the
youth to develop a meaningful relationship.
The program is designed to eventually include community volunteers as mentors.
There will also be a tutorial and community service work component with this
program.
The grant is managed through the Office of Youth Development of Economic
Security (MDES) and is renewable annually.
Financial
The Grant is for $9,929 and requires a match the city of 10% or
approx. $1,000. The Department?s match will come from the current 1999
budget.
The funds will be used to pay officers salaries for weekly group
meets/activities, supplies, speakers, clerical costs associated with the
program and an annual mentor/youth camp.
Council Action Requested
Staff a motion to accept this grant and authorize the City Manager
and Chief of Police to sign the JAIBG acceptance documents.
