Human Rights Commission Minutes
March 18, 2015
Commissioner Carey stated the Civility Training will be held September 19, 2015. The actual
time has not been set yet. The Library's iiscal year will end prior to this date and they are no
]onger guaranteed the funds but they believe they would be able to make a commitment with the
next fiscal year. They have also received $300 from the Rotary Club for event. Once the event
gets closer she would be asking the Commission far additional help and a budget amount for
refreshments.
b. Considerations to Essay Contest for 2015-2016 School Year
Commissioner Bachhuber stated she and Chair Groff had met with the Social Studies and
English departments at RAMS last week. They explained why it was challenging for them to
support the essay contest including changes in their curriculum, the time of year the contest
occurs and the time and resources needed to participate.
Chair Groff suggested forming a committee to do additional research. He would volunteer to
work on this committee. He is also on the League of Human Rights board and he would ask
other Board members to reach out to their schools to get feedback.
Commissioner Slade volunteered for the committee.
Commissioner Bachhuber volunteered for the committee.
Commissioner Singleton asked if the essay would be better suited for older participants and
opening up the contest to include art and poetry for younger participants.
Commissioner Bachhuber explained the content of the essay was difiicult because the students
were not discussing this in class.
Chair Groff stated opening up the contest to other forms of writing or art would appeal to a
broader range of students not necessarily just different age groups.
c. Review and Consider Amendments to the By-Laws
Commissioner Singleton stated under Article 6. Item A.a. Operations Committees: he suggested
changing the last sentence to read: "The Committee is composed of the Chair, Vice Chair, and
Commission member, as pointed by the Chair."
Ms. Collins asked if ad hock committees should be included.
Commissioner Singleton stated the Operations Committee should include only sworn members
of the Commission and ad hock committees may include residents.
Commissioner Carey stated Article 7, Item C should be removed since there would be only one
standing committee.
