Human Rights Commission Minutes
August 19, 2015
b. Update on Mental Health Forum/Discussion
Commissioner Slade stated October 5-11 is Mental Health Awareness week and the National
Alliance on Mental Illness (NAM would like to know if Roseville would host another
community conversation. NAMI's focus is how to better address the needs of children and
adults with mental illness and their families. The event would feature speakers and be similar to
the event previously hosted by the City. This event would be focused on youth and she would
like to engage the Youth Commissioners with this event. With the support of the Commission,
she would continue to work with NAMI on this event and provide more specific information to
the Commission at the September meeting. Based on her schedule she would like to host the
event on Wednesdya, October 7. She would need to work on establishing a time. She would
like to see this as a community event but also get the information to the schools so that the City's
youth can attend.
Commissioner Christiansen asked what the format would be.
Chair Goff stated the last one had been a community discussion with speakers and an
opportunity for discussions after.
Commissioner Slade stated she would recommend the focus of the event be reducing stigma for
youth with mental illness.
Commissioner Carey asked if the Commissioner had gotten information from the attendees of
the previous community forum in order to contact them and make them aware of this event.
Commissioner Slade stated there was contact information and she would be sure to reach out to
these participants.
Commissioner Carey stated she would not be able to attend October 7. She asked if the event
could be recorded.
Commissioner Slade stated she would check into this and find out what would need to be done to
inform participants that it may be recorded.
Chair Groff suggested advertising this event in the Review.
Commissioner Slade stated they would need to find a facilitator for the event. She had done this
for the previous event and she would like to be a participant for this event.
Chair Groff stated he would be available to facilitate and it may be possible to co-facilitate the
event with Commissioner Christiansen.
Commissioner Carev moved and Commissioner Christiansen seconded a motion to
authorize Commissioner Slade to do additional research for a Mental Health Community
Conversation to be held the week of October 5-11. The motion passed unanimouslv.
