, <br />602.102 Continued. <br />� <br />� <br />�' <br />,� <br />� <br />� <br />l <br />� <br />� <br />�� <br />�' <br />� <br />�' <br />� <br />600-2 <br />Granular Backfill ------ Placed beloW the surface base course, if <br />any, as the second stage of baekfill, to <br />minimize trench settlement and provide <br />support for surface improvements. <br />In each case above, unless otherwise indicated, the lower limits of any <br />particular zone shall be the top surface of the next lower course as <br />construeted. The upper limits of each zone are established to define <br />variable needs for material gradation and compaction or void eontent <br />taking into consideration the sequence of construetion and other <br />conditions. The material use and zone designations deseribed above <br />shall only serve to fulfill the objectives and shall not be eonstrued <br />to restrict the use of any particular material in other zones where the <br />gradation requirements are met. <br />603.000 CONSTRUCTION <br />Trench Excavation <br />All work shall be done by open trench excavation except jacked or <br />augured pipe designated on the plans or as direeted by the Engineer. <br />TOPSOIL shall be stripped from the trench and stockpiled to be used <br />over all disturbed areas to be seeded or sodded. Stripping, <br />stockpiling and respreading topsoil will be considered inc idental to <br />the project. <br />TRENCH EXCAVATION shall be dug to the alignment and depth shown on the <br />plans and only 100 feet in advance of the pipe laying. The trench <br />sha71 be braced and drained so that workmen may work safely and <br />efficiently therein. <br />TRENCH WATER shall be drained from the trench into natural drainage <br />channels or storm sewers and shall be considered incidental to <br />construction. Draining trench water irto sanitary sewers will not be <br />permitted. <br />BRACID AND SHEETED TRENCHES shall be put in place and maintained as may <br />be required to support the side of the excavation and to prevent any <br />movement which may in any way endanger personnel or injure or delay the <br />work or endanger adjacen� buildings or other structures. Where <br />sheeting and bracing are used� the trench width sha11 be increased <br />accordingly. Trench sheeting shall remain in place until pipe has been <br />laid, tested for defects and repaired if necessary, and the earth <br />around it compaeted to a depth of one foot (1') over the top of the <br />pipe. Tt shall be the Contraetor�s responsibility for compliance <br />therein. <br />EXCAVATED MATERIAL shall be piled in a manner that will not endanger <br />the work and that will avoid obstructing sidewalks, driveways and <br />drainage.
