The 160 FUNCTIOIAL
CHARACTERISTIS
I-Summary of Characterisic5
. Stored program, general-purpose, digitai
computer
. Operates in high-speed parallel mode
. 12-bit word length
. Addressing features include: direct, in-
direct, and relative adressing
. Constants stored in instructions as well
as in memory
. 4096 words of magnetic core storage:
storage cycle time of 6.4 microseconds
average instruction execufiion time of
15 microseconds
• Single address logic
. Ffexible repertoire of C2 instructions
. Completely solid state: diode logic, tran-
sistor amplifiers, and magnetic core
memory
. Uses 500 watts of 110 volt, 60-cycls power
II—Introduction
Operation of the 160 is sequenced by an internally
stored program. This program, s well as the data
being processed, is contained in the high-speed,
random-access memory. An instruction is a 12-bit
word consisting of: 6-bit function code F, and
a 6-bit execution address E. By means of the
direct, relative, and indirect addressing features,
it is very simple to operate on data in the computer
and to make program modifications when desired.
A general purpose input channel and output
channel are provided for attaching a variety of
input-output devices to the 160 Computer. Stand-
ard input-output equipment consists of a Ferranti
:
S
REGISTER
(12 BITS)
FUNCTION
TRANSLATOR
F
REGISTER
(6 BITS)
B
REGISTER
(12 BITS)
A
REGISTER
(12 BITS)
P
REGISTER
(12 BITS)
C:F, E
STORAGE
4096 WORDS,
12 BITS EACH
Z REGISTER
(12 BITS}
ADDER
(12 BITS)
