W-1.2 Electrical Conductivi
Each joint on cast iron pipe, vales, hydrants or fittings, either "push-on"
or mechanical joint type sha11 be electrically bonded with an external copper
jumper capable of carrying 500 ampso af current for an extended period of
time to provide integral elctric thawing capabilities,
These copper jumpers can be either shop or field applied in accordance with
these specifications. For field applied copper jumpers, either the "Burndy-
Thermoweld" as supplied by Burndy Corporation, Norwalk, Connecticut, or
"Cadweld" by Erico Products Company, Cleveland, Ohi will be permitted.
Contractors or suppliers shall submit the method they propose to use for
approval prior to construction.
The copper jumper shall be a minimum 1/16" x 1/2" wide flat strip or equal
cross section round copper wire in the annealed condition conforming to
ASTM Specification B152-58 Type DHP.
' All copper jumpers shall be welded to the pipe and fittings by the metallic-
arc welding process, if shop applied or by the exothermic welding process
if field applied.
I

I
The copper jumper can be applied as a single sCrip welded at each end across
the joint or by multiple strips with bolted connections in the middle.
Silicon bronze bolts and ntits sha11 be used on all bolted connections.
All welded connections shall be made on a clean metal surface which has
been graund to remove coating and oxide. The area at the connection,
including the wel.d, shall Ue refinished with its original coating or other
suitable protective coatings specitied.
The assembled copper jumper across the joints shall be so installed thaC
expansion, contraction, or relative pipe movement incidenta] to normal serviee
use will not damage the connestion to such an extnt that electrical resist-
ance will vary ac.ss the joint.

 W-2

The completed water main system shall be tesCed fr electrical conductivity
according to that stted elsewhere in these specifictions.
CONSTRUCTION REQUIRETiENTS
W-2.1 Depth of Cut: The water main sha11 be plced with minimum 8 feet of cover.
However, reater depth may Ue required at cerCain 1ocCians to clear existing
sanitary sewer and sanirary sewer services. Acccrdingly, the pipe will be
laid to the depth sbstntially as sho.m on thc plans. These adjustments
may be required in the field, nd no unit of ineasurement or paymnt shall
apply for such varitiun.
W-2 .2 Excava tion A11 w•rk sha 1 1 le d,ne by open cut .
' W - 3
