Jo}in LVilmus (Tom Wilmus' son) Marhula, Don Ringrose, and
Christine Allen (the latter two from BRjV) were in to discuss their
proposed solution to redesign the easterly entraice to Tom tNilmus°
new office building west of Hamline, south of Centennial Drive.
You will recall this building is set back 20 feet rather than the
recuired 30 feet due to an error in surveying when the foundation
was laid. T}iey propose to run a two flight set of stairs straiglit
easterly from t}ie entrance at the second level. This requires a
portion of. the bottom stairway to be in tlle public right-of-way.
It would also renuire moving the sidewalk further into the public
rigllt-of-way (west side of Hamline). We suggested tliat this would
encourage people to stop tlieir cars on Hamline and enter the building
from this side, and that tlie previous design which orientated this
entrance to tlie soutll (toward tlleir driveway) worked better. Even
tliougli tlie county lias apparently indicated tliat extending the walk 5
feet into tlie rigllt-of-way may not impede any future construction or
upgrading of Hamline Avenue, we feel ttiat liaving it this way is
wrong in principle, and will promote use of Hamline Avenue as a
drop off point. jJe llave since received a letter from BRW indicating
that they propose to pursue the riglit-of-way encroacliment solution.
An application for a variance to correct the 10 foot discrepancy will
be pending.
2) fdelson - 944-8090. B. Nelson is a director of construction for
Jendy's hamburger stores, one of wllic}i is, as you kncw, in Roseville
at 1899 'Vest Primeter Drive. T11ey are requesting to place a 10 foot
by 7 foot by 5 foot temporary ►,ooden storage Uuilding on the back of
tleir Uuildilg. Tliis vould be used to store tlieir paper products until
tlley are aUle to expand tlie building permaneiitly vitliin this next year.
We toTd them if this temporary structure ►vere combined lrith a
wooden fence 7 foot 6 foot high of the same material attached to the
back of tlie buildilg, t}1at this would be acceptable as a temporary
measure. T1iis store, by tlie way tlieyinform us, started out with
four products anticipating $12,OOO.UO a week, and is now doing
$20,000.00 a week. It is one of t}ieir better stores.
3) Jones - 378-2430. A1 Hoffineyer aas in to review the revised plans
for Jones development of tlie sixteen unit PUD west of Lexington,
soutli of tlie mobile home court. tiVe brought in Bruce Ryden so that
we could agree on an appropriate interim alci permanent solution
for fire truc}; turnaround facilities. Acljustments were made in
building location so as to allow for atemporary construction of a
private road bend on a public street, and ultimate construction
for tlie public cul-de-sac. It appears tlis solution will work well,
with tlie only real question being tliat of the economics of street
construction (private vs, public). Unfortunately, the owner
