Human Rights Commission Minutes <br />April 20, 2016 – Minutes <br />Page 5 of 6 <br /> <br />Ms. Curti stated Elizabeth Hansel had interviewed for a Youth Commission position with the <br />Commission in 2015. She is still interested in the position. The Commission can decide to <br />make a recommendation to the City Council to appoint Elizabeth or open up the position for <br />additional applicants. <br /> <br />Chair Groff suggested recommending the City Council appoint Elizabeth Hansel as a Youth <br />Commissioner for the Human Rights Commission. <br /> <br />Commissioner Carey moved and Commissioner Christiansen seconded a motion to <br />recommend Elizabeth Hansel to the City Council for appointment to the Human <br />Rights Commission as a Youth Commissioner. <br /> <br />Ms. Curti stated she would follow up with Elizabeth and communicate with her the <br />Commission is seeking approval for her appointment to the Commission. <br /> <br />Motion passed unanimously. <br /> <br />d.Second Chance Coalition <br /> <br /> <br />Chair Groff stated before the Commission could consider making the goals of the Second <br />Chance Coalition a focus they would need to discuss it in greater detail. <br /> <br />Commissioner Slade stated she felt this was an important issue related to the rights of <br />these individuals. <br /> <br />Commissioner Carey stated there is a lack of education on this topic and there is an <br />opportunity for the Commission to partner them to provide some of this education. <br /> <br />Commissioner Dailey stated the Commission should be bold and take on the tougher issues. <br /> <br />Chair’s Report <br /> <br />Chair Groff stated he had been working the KOM and Advocates for Human Rights and the <br />community dialogues. The Naturalization Ceremony had 26 new citizens from 12 countries. <br />He stated the Commission had received an email from a resident about an issue he was <br />concerned about. He had met with the resident and let him know there was not much the <br />Human Rights Commission could do in this particular situation because it was a police issue. <br />He had recommended the resident discuss the issue with the police or the City Council. <br /> <br />Youth Commissioner Report <br /> <br /> Youth Commissioner Cederberg stated the Summer Book Read list had not finalized. Their <br />next meeting was in late May. He asked if he could provide choices for the Commission to <br />consider prior to the next meeting because he had planned on the discussions being in June. <br />The list from last year had contained three possible titles pertaining to human rights. <br /> <br />Commissioner Christiansen moved seconded by Commissioner Slade to have Youth <br />Commissioner Cederberg identify a book and establish dates for the summer book <br />read program. <br /> <br /> <br /> <br />
