Human Rights Commission Minutes
June 15, 2016 – Draft Minutes

Chair Groff stated they do not have a limited number of people and he will meet with the Karin
to find out how many people they would have walking with the HRC in the parade.

b.Essay Contest Question

Chair Groff stated they had 3-4 questions last year that would be good to present. The biggest
feedback they had received from the principle had been the timing of the contest had been the
reason there had been such a large participation rate. He recommended the Commission follow
the same time line as 2015 to allow students and teachers time to discuss the topics and work on
their essay.

Ms. Curti stated she would forward the questions from 2015 to the Commission for discussion at
the next meeting.

c.Vote for Women Film Festival – August 18

Ms. Curti stated the Ramsey County Library and the Shoreview Human Rights Commission
would be hosting Vote for Women: A film Festival on August 18 at the Roseville Library. There
would be two short films about ratifying the Nineteenth Amendment and Ramsey County
Commissioner Mary Jo McGuire would be the speaker. The Shoreview HRC is working on a
poster to promote the event and the Commission would also promote the event.

d.Discussion of Possible Fall Activities

Chair Groff stated the Commission had considered partnering with the Centers for Victims of
Torture or a presentation on immigrants’ trauma and mental health. Other options included
working with National Alliance for Mental Illness (NAMI) on a mental illness forum but he
would like to wait to discuss this until Commissioner Slade was available. Commissioner Dailey
had proposed doing a program for cultural appropriation.

Commissioner Dailey stated the Commission had discussed having her write something for the
review. She stated they could ask the City Council to make a statement that they do not support
cultural appropriation at Halloween.

Chair Groff suggested Commissioner Dailey draft a Resolution for the Commission to review
and forward to the City Council for their review and possible adoption.

e.Human Rights Commission Awards

Commissioner Dailey suggested changing the deadline for the HRC award to the fall so that it
does not coincide with the Essay Contest.

Chair Groff stated they could change the deadline for submissions but the Commission would
still need to get the word out and solicit submissions.
