Human Rights Commission Minutes <br />June 15, 2016 – Draft Minutes <br />Page 5 of 5 <br /> <br />Chair Groff stated the Commission has been working on voting this year. Their other main focus <br />had been on mental health and Commissioner Slade was looking having a mental health dialogue <br />geared towards youth in the fall. He stated this would be included in the July agenda. <br /> <br />Commissioner Carey asked if there were other events in the City that they could work with to <br />incorporate cultural awareness or other human rights topics. <br /> <br />Commissioner Dailey stated it would be good to incorporate celebrating different cultures with <br />the Rosefest Parade. <br /> <br />Chair Groff stated this is something the City Council has asked for and the Commission could <br />work on this for the 2017 parade. <br /> <br />Ms. Curti stated the High School has an event that celebrates different cultures and the <br />Commission may want to contact them for information and potentially work with and promote. <br /> <br />Commissioner Dailey stated mental health could also focus on the senior citizen population <br />because this is an overlooked group in the community. <br /> <br />Chair Groff stated this could be something the Commission could bring to the seniors. <br /> <br />Ms. Curti stated there is a group focusing on Alzheimer’s and dementia. <br /> <br />Commissioner Peterson stated she would look into this topic and potential speakers. <br /> <br />Chair Groff stated the City Council had conducted interviews for the opening on the HRC. He <br />had provided his preferences to the City Council for consideration. The City Council will vote on <br />this at their June 20, 2016 meeting. The Commission should be fully staffed by the July meeting. <br /> <br />Commissioner Johnson stated the concerns regarding the lights on Lexington and Larpenteur are <br />being sent to the County since they are not under the control of the City. <br /> <br />Chair Groff suggested Commissioner Johnson talk to Mary Jo McGuire. He stated he had <br />attended the A Line Light Rail opening. <br /> <br />Adjournment <br /> <br /> <br />Commissioner Carey moved and Commissioner Dailey seconded a motion to adjourn. <br />Motion passed unanimously.
