Human Rights Commission Minutes
December 9, 2015 – Draft Minutes
136
Ms. Collins suggested the Commissioners forward their recommendations to her and she would
137
compile these for the Commission’s discussion. She stated if there was any language that would
138
overlap the HRC’s duties with other Commissions then this should be discussed and updated.
139
140
c.Review and Discuss 2016 Commission Schedule
141
142
Chair Groff stated the City Council had discussed meeting frequency for the Commissions and
143
he asked for input from the Commissioners on how often the Human Rights Commission should
144
meet.
145
146
Commissioner Christiansen suggested having the minutes condensed.
147
148
Ms. Collins stated the City Council wants to see the minutes continue in their current format and
149
it is the City’s policy to make every Commission meeting public. She clarified the Council
150
wanted all Commissions to review their schedules to ensure they were not meeting more than
151
necessary. She stated each Commission had to meet quarterly at a minimum.
152
153
Commissioner Carey suggested since they did not have a full Commission and clear direction
154
from the Council they could meet every other month for the first 6-months. This could be
155
changed once there is a full Commission and clear goals for the Commission.
156
157
Commissioner Christiansen expressed concerns with meeting every other month because she
158
would need Commission input for the Essay Contest.
159
160
Ms. Collins stated the Commission could accomplish what they want by meeting every other
161
month and have special meetings if necessary.
162
163
Commissioner Christiansen suggested if the Commission met every other month there could be
164
an understanding among the Commissioners that if a special meeting is needed it would be on
165
what would have been the regular meeting time and date.
166
167
Commissioner Carey stated meeting monthly does provide more accountability for projects and
168
allow for Commissioners to bring their ideas forward in a timely manner.
169
170
Commissioner Carey moved and Commissioner Christiansen seconded a motion to publish
171
the 2016 Human Rights Commission meeting schedule with monthly meetings scheduled
172
for the third Wednesday of each month. Motion passed unanimously.
173
174
d.Discuss 2016 Naturalization Ceremony
175
176
Ms. Collins stated the U.S. District Courts require official approval on the date for the ceremony,
177
which is tentatively scheduled for Monday, April 18, 2016. The Olympic Room is available on
178
this date as well.
179
180
