April 20, 2016 <br />Item 4 <br />Approve Minutes <br />Human Rights Commission <br />1 <br />Meeting Minutes <br />2 <br />DRAFT March 16, 2016 - DRAFT <br />3 <br /> <br />4 <br /> <br />5 <br />Commissioners: <br /> Chair Wayne Groff, Molli Slade, and Lisa Carey <br />6 <br />Youth Commissioners: <br /> Gabriel Cederberg <br />7 <br />Commissioners Absent: <br />Arlene Christiansen <br />8 <br /> <br />9 <br />Staff Present: <br /> Kari Collins <br />10 <br /> <br />11 <br />Call to Order <br />12 <br /> <br />13 <br />The Human Rights Commission (HRC) meeting was called to order at 6:00 p.m. Chair Groff <br />14 <br />requested roll call. <br />15 <br /> <br />16 <br />Approve Agenda <br /> <br />17 <br /> <br />18 <br />Commissioner Slade moved and Commissioner Carey seconded a motion to approve the <br />19 <br />agenda as presented. Motion passed unanimously. <br />20 <br /> <br />21 <br />Public Comment on Items Not on Agenda <br /> <br />22 <br /> <br />23 <br />There being no one wishing to address the Human Rights Commission, Chair Groff moved to the <br />24 <br />next agenda item. <br />25 <br /> <br />26 <br />Old Business <br />27 <br /> <br />28 <br /> <br />a.Essay Contest <br />29 <br /> <br />30 <br />Commissioner Carey suggested making the essay known in the schools but not make it <br />31 <br />mandatory assignment. <br />32 <br /> <br />33 <br />Youth Commissioner Cederberg stated when he had been eligible for the Essay Contest the <br />34 <br />assignment had been mandatory but the submission to the Essay Contest itself had been optional. <br />35 <br /> <br />36 <br />Commissioner Slade agreed that they could ask that the assignment be mandatory but the <br />37 <br />submission to the Essay Contest could be optional. <br />38 <br /> <br />39 <br />Ms. Collins stated the National Council of Teachers of English (NCTE) sponsor an essay contest <br />40 <br />each year. They do this as an assignment and thee teachers would nominate the top three from <br />41 <br />each class. <br />42 <br /> <br />43 <br />Chair Groff suggested continuing this discussion when there is a full Commission. <br />44 <br /> <br />45 <br /> <br /> <br />
