Human Rights Commission Minutes <br />October 21, 2015 <br />Page 2 of 7 <br /> <br />Commissioner Slade moved and Commissioner Carey seconded a motion to approve the <br />September 16, 2015 meeting minutes as amended. Motion passed unanimously. <br /> <br /> <br />Public Comment on Items Not on Agenda <br /> <br /> <br />There being no one present wishing to speak to the Commission on an item not on the agenda, <br />the Chair moved to the next agenda item. <br /> <br /> <br />Old Business <br /> <br /> <br />a.Update on Mental Health Forum/Discussion <br /> <br />Commissioner Slade stated the Youth Program Director from the National Alliance of Mental <br />Illness (NAMI) had presented a video and discussions about youth and mental health. The <br />presentation had been compiled by Andrea Lee and included videos from students. Chief <br />Mathwig and Councilmember McGehee also attended the event. There were about 20 people in <br />attendance. <br /> <br />Chair Groff stated the event had been well presented and informational. <br /> <br />Commissioner Christiansen asked if the video would be available for the High School to use. <br /> <br />Chair Groff stated they are limited with time and The Youth Program Director is the one who <br />does the presentations in schools. <br /> <br />Commissioner Slade stated one of the attendees had followed up with the High School Principal. <br />th <br />Dr. Loeck stated they do a presentation for 10 grade students on metal health illness. She will <br />continue to encourage this student to work on youth mental illness awareness in the school. <br /> <br />Youth Commissioner Cederberg stated the High School discussions had been more about the <br />extremes of mental illness including schizophrenia rather than more common illnesses such as <br />Aspergers. <br /> <br />Commissioner Christiansen asked if the video would be available for purchase. <br /> <br />Commissioner Slade stated it would be best to have someone who can lead the discussions rather <br />than just show the video. <br /> <br /> <br />b.Update on Student Essay Contest <br /> <br />Commissioner Christiansen stated she was working with Ms. Bachhuber on the essay contest. <br />She is assisting with setting up the rubric. The City Council did agree with the Commission’s <br />decision to use the City’s proposed question on voting versus the Minnesota League of Human <br /> <br />
