Human Rights Commission Minutes
October 21, 2015

Ms. Collins recommended Commissioner Cederberg talk with Corey Yonke because he is
working with the Roseville Police Foundation to do a soccer clinic or soccer camp. He may be a
good resource for him in the future.

Commissioner Christiansen stated the League of Women Voters would be facilitating a
discussion on domestic abuse. There would be a police panel discussion on their practices and
how they investigate domestic cases. The event will be on November 17. November 13 and 14,
is the 2015 Overcoming Racism Conference at Metropolitan State University. Facilitating
Racial Equality Collaborative and Overcomingracism.org are hosting the event. Roseville
University has two (2) sessions in November.

b.Receive and Discuss Shoreview Human Rights Idea Proposal

Ms. Collins read the email received from the Chair of the Shoreview Human Rights
Commission:
“At our most recent HRC meeting I proposed having a public screening of the
documentary “America’s Civil Rights Movement - A Time for Justice” but my idea was
quickly rejected. The film is narrated by Julian Bond, so this is why I thought it would be
an ideal opportunity to show it. Like the “Selma” documentary it is available for free for
the Southern Poverty Loss Center. You just need a proposal of how you want use it
attached to the original proposal (which was attached to the email) for the event in
August. If you wish to show it at the Roseville Library, Judy Woodward is the History
Coordinator. She said they do not normally do anything for the MLK (Martin Luther
King) holiday because they focus on Black History Month in February but she is always
open to new ideas. I like that the Library can effectively market events and get the word
out to a wide audience. On a negative note there was a negative comment about Dunn
Brothers being too expensive.”

Commissioner Christiansen stated she would support this proposal.

Chair Groff stated it would involve planning but they do have the template for the event that had
been held in August. He stated he had not seen the film but the Chair of the Shoreview HRC had
stated it was good. They would also need to coordinate with the Library for the space.

Youth Commissioner Cederberg stated he would contact Judy Woodward at the Library to see if
there are available dates and if they would promote the event.

Ms. Collins suggested the Commission consider having a speaker available for a question and
answer session after the showing.

Commissioner Christiansen stated Ms. Woodward might know historians that would be
interested in facilitating this.

c.Discuss MN Second Chance Coalition’s ‘Restore the Vote’ campaign
