pi
AVENUE VETERINARY CLINIC
DVM.
712-722-2522
349 Filer i,Main Avenue 1.800-642.6594
Sioux Center, A 51250
Fax 712-722-1328
I am a licensed practicing veterinarian for over 38 years.I graduated from UC Davis Collage of Veterinary
Medicine.I own and operated a small animal veterinary clinic in Iowa.I work with the public and with many
Professional Licensed Breeders and Pet Stores.I support and help the Professional Breeders to practice up-to date
animal husbandry and expand their abilities provide the utmost care for their animals.I support the selling and
buying of animals from Pet Stores. The animals there are raised and cared for by Professional Licensed Breeders
who have strict laws and regulations to follow at both state and federal levels. These breeders are Professionals who
are always striving to better themselves through educational classes and seminars in animal husbandry. This enables
the Professional Breeders to provide the consumers, both the public and pet stores, with a healthy and behavioral
sound pet.I have seen these pets brought in by our many clients who have bought their pet from a Pet Store, and we
find these pups to be healthy and behavioral sound.
Some of my clients have bought an animal from a shelter or rescue.and I have seen that many of these animals have
behavioral or physical issues,and/or illnesses that have not been addressed prior to being placed with the new
owners. There is no guarantee for the clients who have bought these pets, other than to"return the pet and receive a
different one".While the Pet Stores are required to have guarantees to protect the new pet owners and public and the
animals in their stores. When I have people looking for a new pet for their family and I recommend the families to
look at breeders and pets stores, both are places of information and support for the families.I have no issue with
supporting our local shelters, however,in the past few years I have seen more unhealthy, and very aggressive dogs
being placed with families by shelters/rescues and being transported from ether states and countries, with no
accountability being placed on the shelters/rescues.This is concerning to me as a Veterinarian and as an Animal
Lover,it is concerning because families are expected to"deal with"behavioral issues with no support from the
rescues and in many cases, there is no good ending for the animal and families. There are diseases and parasites that
can be transmitted from animal to animal to animal and from animal to human, such as ringworm, and scabies, and
rabies. There are many others, but theseare ones that are very concerning to families with young children.
My clinic serves as our"Town Pound,"but we do not re-home any animal that is aggressive, and if an animal is ill
we keep it until it is healthy. It is our responsibility to our communities and to the animals that our placed in our
care,to ensure the animals that are re-horned from us are behavioral sound and physically healthy. While I work to
educate all new pet owners on care for their animals, regardless of the animal's origin,[find that by far and large the
animals that have come from Pet Stores and the Professional Breeders are healthier and most of all more behavioral
sound.I also find the owners to be more knowledgeable on the care of their new per.
A.G.
