TheUniversityofMinnesota(SamFahrner,BrianAukema,RobVenette)workedwiththeMDAtoanalyzethe <br />impactoftreeremovalbyStPaulandMinneapolisonEABpopulationgrowthduring20092014andisinthe <br />processofpublishingapaperontheanalysis.AkeyfindingwasthatthereweremoreEABintreeswith <br />woodpeckingthanwithout.Themanagementregimeremovedabout60%ofthetreesandreducedthebeetle <br />populationbyabout60%.TheanalysissuggestedthataboutthesameimpactcouldhavebeenmadeontheEAB <br />populationwithabout30%ofthetreesremovedifonlywoodpeckedtreeshadbeenremoved. <br />TheUofMandMDAhavealsobeenworkingonastudyevaluatingtheeffectivenessofmonitoringintermsof <br />informingmanagementdecisions.Theresultshavebeenpromisingandindicatethatanyofthemonitoring <br />techniquestested(visual,trap,branchsampling)canidentifyEABinfestationsbeforesubstantialimpacttothe <br />overallcanopyofthesite. <br /> <br />
