In his own mind, Luther was a wretched sinner who, in the depths of despair, discovered the
true understanding of Scripture, buried under centuries of misinterpretation. Among German
contemporaries, Luther's defiance of the Pope sparked challenges to authority of all kinds, including
his own. Join University of Minnesota Professor Emeritus James Tracy as he explores the paradox of
a revolutionary who hated revolution. Amid the anarchy he had unwittingly touched off, Luther
built a new order.

This lecture is free and open to the community without pre-registration.
This series is supported financially by Minnesota’s Arts and Cultural Heritage Fund.
