It’s like hearing your favorite college professors again without worrying about writing
papers or taking finals! Co-sponsored by the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute of the University of
Minnesota \[OLLI\].
David A. Schultz on American Politics in the Age of Ignorance: Why
Lawmakers Choose Belief Over Evidence
State and local governments are often trumpeted as laboratories of democracy, capable of
significant policy innovation and expertise. Yet the reality is that more often than not both repeatedly
reenact failed policies that past research shows do not work. Prof. David Schultz of Hamline and the
University of Minnesota Law Schools examines why failed policies and political myths dominate the
political process by looking at such hot button issues as immigration and welfare migration;seeking
to lure businesses with tax breaks;and providing public subsidies for sports stadiums.
This lecture is free and open to community members without pre-registration.

This series is supported financially by Minnesota’s Arts and Cultural Heritage Fund.
