Human Rights, Inclusion and Engagement Commission Minutes <br />July 19, 2017 Draft Minutes <br />Page 8 of 16 <br />Ms. Olson stated it may have been more helpful if she had sent out the full list of topics the <br />313 <br />subcommittee had to work with so the whole Commission could see what those topics were. <br />314 <br />315 <br />Commissioner Groff advised against postponing the decision on the question because it needs to <br />316 <br />be given to the teachers at the beginning of the school year. <br />317 <br />318 <br />Commissioner Manke recommended the subcommittee put together a summary on how to select <br />319 <br />a question as a guide for next year and include the questions that have been asked in the past. She <br />320 <br />recommended in the future, the full Commission be presented with a couple of options to choose <br />321 <br />from. Commissioner Groff agreed with Commissioner Manke. <br />322 <br />323 <br />Commissioner Groff moved to accept the following question for the 2018 Essay Contest: <br />324 <br />Disparities such as racism, sexism and ageism among others are still occurring today. Choose <br />325 <br />one disparity and explain what you think the underlying cause is. What can be done to address it? <br />326 <br />Include personal and/or sourced examples. <br />327 <br />328 <br />Commissioner Peterson requested more discussion on what the disparity is. <br />329 <br />330 <br />Commissioner Dailey thanked the subcommittee for their work. She stated in the past they have <br />331 <br />asked participants to provide a definition as part of the essay. She suggested they ask participants <br />332 <br />to define what a disparity is as part of the question, and then explain the causes. <br />333 <br />334 <br />335 <br />will help with the grading rubric to have clearly defined expectations. <br />336 <br />337 <br />After discussion, the Commission decided to change the essay question to reflect the following: <br />338 <br />Disparities such as racism, sexism and ageism among others are still occurring today.
