The goal of the pilot was to provide collection in one park using the same collections method and
frequency requested in the City's RFP and monitor for several factors including:
• Volume (how much material was showing up in the carts each week?)
• Contamination (non -recyclable things in the recycling)
• Tons collected
• Park Visitor Feedback
• Parks Staff Feedback
The following is the breakdown of the information that was gathered during the pilot. This report ends
with recommendation for how we can proceed with a citywide roll-out of recycling collection in all
pa rks.
Volume of Recycling in Carts:
One of the important metrics we measured is volume. Volume helps you determine how often the carts
need to be tipped in order to avoid overfull carts. The following chart breaks down the fill levels of carts
and lists how many carts of this level of fullness were reported each month. In the second portion of
the chart it lists the percentage off all carts reported had this particular fill level for that month.
Volume
May
Jun
Jul
Aug
Sep
Oct
Grand Total
Contamination
2
1
5
2
4
2
16
overflowing
0
0
2
0
0
0
2
Full
8
10
29
15
19
8
89
Half Full
9
14
29
17
20
14
103
Missing - No Cart Found
0
0
6
1
2
3
12
Empty
16
36
39
41
57
53
242
Quarter Full
22
23
37
23
29
49
183
Three Quarters Full
2
4
2
6
4
1
19
Total
59
88
149
105
135
130
666
Contamination
3%
1%
3%
2%
3%
2%
2%
overflowing
0%
0%
1%
0%
0%
0%
0%
Full
14%
11%
19%
14%
14%
6%
13%
Half Full
15%
16%
19%
16%
15%
11%
16%
Missing - No Cart Found
0%
0%
4%
1%
1%
2%
2%
Empty
27%
41%
26%
39%
42%
41%
36%
Quarter Full
37%
26%
25%OMMJJ6
21%
38%
28%
Three Quarters Full
3%
5%
1%
6%
3%
1%
3%
In each month the majority of carts were either empty or a quarter full. This shows that volumes are
not that high. Rarely was there a cart that was reported as overflowing. There is a correlation between
fullness of cart and cart location type which we will discussed a bit later in this report.
