youth and student involvement, at the one -star level, and examples of other ways to
engage youth and students are available on the GreenStep Cities webpage. Many of the
actions for this best practice naturally go hand in hand, and completing the required
actions of 24.1 and 24.2 will lay the groundwork for adopting other community
involvement initiatives in the city.
Involving the community in the process of sustainability is one of the most
important aspects of the longevity and efficacy of sustainability initiatives, and is also
one of the most difficult. It adds an element of uncertainty, potentially decreases short-
term efficiency, and requires a certain vulnerability, as the inner workings of the
government are revealed to the community. However, it can also be a source of
creativity, energy, and inspiration to pursue progress and improvement. As it says on
the GreenStep webpage for this best practice, "the experience of cities that engage
community members and publicly report on progress is very powerful: this
accountability drives more action faster than if city plans and activities are mostly
developed and discussed by only city staff and elected officials." The Roseville
community has already shown its enthusiasm for environmental and sustainable
initiatives through its interest and participation in other programs, and will certainly
continue to support the city through the implementation of this best practice.
