Human Rights, Inclusion and Engagement Commission Minutes
October 18, 2017—Draft Minutes
Page 8of10
Councilmember Peterson expressed strong support for the program.
An unidentified member of the public (2:21) asked whether members of the HRIEC could attend
the training workshops without having to engage in all of subsequent homework. Ms. Olson
responded that it is possible, but it might be frustrating and difficult for the participant not to
work through all the information he/she is being presented.
Commissioner Manke noted perhaps participants get more out of the GARE training the longer
they are in it.
Ms. Olson stated after four months of this GARE training at a previous job, they struggled with
how to share that information with other employees, because there was so much information.
Chair Holub asked whether someone would like to participate in the GARE training.
Commissioner Djevi expressed an interest in participating, though admitted it would be
challenging to take that much time away from work.
Ms. Olson offered to research the Elected and Appointed Officials track to GARE to see if that
might present a better option for Commission members, due to its significant time commitment.
L Review of Annual City Proclamations
Ms. Olson noted that this week she received notification of the proclamation of National Native
American Heritage month.
Chair Holub commented that a couple months ago, a resident raised questions about why the
City does proclamations. She suggested there are two tracks that HRIEC can take in
approaching a discussion about this issue. First, what is the philosophy behind proclamations in
general. Second, what should HRIEC do about this proclamation (National Native American
Heritage month) in particular.
Commissioner Groff suggested it be added to the City's list along with the other proclamations,
and that at a later time HRIEC can have a more in-depth conversation about the rationale behind
proclamations in general. The Commissioners agreed.
Ms. Olson asked whether she should include this proclamation on the City Council's next
meeting agenda. Chair Holub responded that it can be included on the agenda, but that HRIEC
would take no position on it, until the in-depth discussion is held at a future meeting.
Other New Business or Reports
a.
