Human Rights, Inclusion and Engagement Commission Minutes
November 15, 2017—Draft Minutes
a. Staff Report—Updates from last meeting
Ms. Olson directed the Commission to page 13 of the meeting packet and reported
Commissioner Kevin Lindsey from the Minnesota Department of Human Rights (DHS) is
confirmed to attend the January HRIEC meeting. She requested Commissioners fill out a form
with details on possible topics they would like him to address. She also suggested they go over
the proposed draft language for the website.
The Commission provided the following suggestions for topics to be discussed with
Commissioner Kevin Lindsey at the January HRIEC meeting:
• An overview on what is going on at the State level and other areas, and how it could be
applied to Roseville.
• Information on how the Minnesota DHS handles complaints and how that process could
be better articulated when people approach members of the Commission.
• Inquire if there are any specific complaints from Roseville.
• An overview on how they can find out what the outcomes of the complaints are and if
there was any type of mediation involved.
• Inquire how the City can be in touch with the issues associated with the complaints.
Commissioner Peterson inquired if the subcommittee was attempting to get statistics on the
number of complaints filed from Roseville with Minnesota DHS.
Ms. Olson responded a request was submitted but she has not heard if there were any specific
complaints filed or completed. She requested Commissioners email her additional discussion
topics by early next week.
Ms. Olson directed the Commission to page 16 of the meeting packet and provided an overview
on the proposed website revisions.
The Commission discussed the proposed changes and agreed the first thing that should be shown
is what they do, not what they do not do. They suggested the first paragraph be moved below the
three bullet points and include, "If you wish to file a complaint, visit the Minnesota Department
of Human Rights" with a link to the Minnesota DHS website. They decided not to keep the time
limit wording on the HRIEC website since it is included on the DHS website.
Commissioner Manke noted in the past they have included pictures from the parade and a group
picture.
Commissioner Carey inquired if the 2017 Essay Question Contest Winners will be removed.
Ms. Olson responded she is not sure if they are removed prior to the next contest or when the
new winners are announced.
