Human Rights, Inclusion and Engagement Commission Minutes
November 15, 2017—Draft Minutes
Commissioner Groff stated typically the names have been replaced with the new winners, but
they could be removed earlier.
Chair Holub referred to the three bullet points included on the website and suggested it be
changed to use wording from the ordinance. Each paragraph could begin with the verbs
Evaluate, Advise, and Engage, and include the first couple sentences currently under each
section.
Commissioner Peterson suggested they add other items they participate in under Current
Projects.
Ms. Olson suggested the Current Projects section be updated throughout the year as they finalize
projects they plan to participate in and as projects come up.
Commissioner Manke noted they could tentatively include projects they know the Council
supports and add to it after the plan is passed. These items may include the parade, Parry in the
Park, and the Essay Contest.
Youth Commissioner Report
Youth Commissioner Hansel noted there was nothing new to report.
New Business
a. Debrief From Joint Meeting
Chair Holub suggested they share their thoughts and some of the take-aways from the joint
meeting.
Commissioner Manke stated it seemed the things they have always done were accepted by the
Council without too much hesitation. They have made mistakes and when they used the word
"monitoring," it sent flags up with the Council. They provided a basic overview and the Council
did not understand that some projects would be defined in greater detail with a project plan.
Commissioner Groff commented it seemed the Council did not want them to have any
subcommittees and they will have to figure out how they can do their work. He also felt the
Council thought their plan was too ambitious and should be narrowed down.
Commissioner Carey agreed that the Council thought they were being too ambitious and they
need to figure out two or three issues to focus on for the next year. Regarding the discussion
around subcommittees, she thought the Council was supportive of incorporating everyone on the
Commission to be part of subcommittees to work on projects.
