Item 8b.
Engagement Efforts
Background
U of M Students Capstone Project
The City of Roseville invited residents to hear from University of Minnesota(UMN) students
who have devoted a semester to studying Roseville's environmental and land use planning
policies.
Each year, UMN students completing a course in Environmental Sciences, Policy and
Management take on a real world project that puts into practice what the students had been
learning for the past four years. This year, the students undertook a project with the City of
Roseville.
Students, working in small groups and acting as consultants, looked at a variety of environmental
issues identified by the city's Parks and Recreation Department, including organics recycling,
storm ponds, natural resources and asset management. For the past semester, the students
collected and analyzed data, and, based on the data, prepared recommendations to the city.
Students presented their recommendations on Wednesday, December 13 at 6:30 p.m. at
Roseville City Hall, 2660 Civic Center Drive.
Buckthorn Busters -Help Maintain Roseville Parks
Make an impact on Roseville parks and natural resources. Roseville is looking for volunteers to
join our Natural Resources Renewal efforts to improve city parks. On December 16, we'll be
dragging and stacking buckthorn in Central Park.
Drag and Stack Buckthorn
Saturday,December 16
10:00 to noon
Central Park
Meet at arboretum, 2525 Dale St.
Each month, Roseville hosts a volunteer opportunity at one of the local parks as part of the natural
resources renewal project. The efforts have greatly reduced the spread of buckthorn, so volunteers are
attacking smaller buckthorn stands to prevent wildlife from spreading seeds to other areas.
Groups, individuals, and families are encouraged to participate. People of all ages are welcome
and will have a role to play.
