City Initiatives and Financial Highlights During 1995 <br />The City provides a full range of municipal services as authorized by state statute. This includes <br />general government, public safety, public works, pazks and recreation, water and sewer utilities <br />and community development. Within those areas of responsibilities, the City's goals for 1995 <br />were: <br />1. To continue to implement the economic redevelopment of areas in the City which contain <br />obsolete and low value truck terminals or a�ino commercial facilities. <br />2. To continue to emphasize housing development through new construction, rehabilitation and <br />enhancement of current housing stock. <br />3. To further develop the environment and qualiry of life of the City by creating appropriate <br />open spaces and recreational opportunities. <br />The City achieved several objectives within the goals above and below are summazies of those <br />results. <br />1. The City's strong economic development efforts were primarIly focused on cleaning up highly <br />polluted sites in the city's redevelopment areas. Several parcels have been de-contaminated <br />and now contain new office and service buildings. <br />2. A major new housing development was begun in 1995, which will provide the city with a <br />supply of move-up housing for the communiry. School District 623 dedicated 77.5 acres of <br />surpius land to development. The district has begun to construct 79 single family homes <br />averaging $300,000 per unit and 60 town homes averaging $190,000 per unit. In addition, <br />surrounding properry owners added an additional 38 uniu of housing to create a total of 17 i <br />units of new homes. <br />3. Co-operation with the School District 623 continued in 1995 by the addition of a$920,000 <br />�ymnastics center at the districYs high school funded by the city. To date the city and school <br />district have jointly developed two expanded gymnasiums, a gymnastics center, and baseball <br />fields all for both school and community-wide use. <br />FutureProjs_cts <br />On the basis of the City's efforts in 1995, the ciry is expected to continue to work toward the <br />economic development of vazious contaminated parcels, to develop additional senior housing <br />altematives, unplement several housing unprovement programs. <br />The City is also expected to make spec�c plans to implement additional recreational community <br />facilities. Such facilities include additional park development, activity center spaces and the <br />development of skating center amenities. <br />3 <br />
