Human Rights, Inclusion and Engagement Commission Minutes December 19, 2018 – Draft Minutes Page 8of 14 315 Vice Chair Peterson stated staff are the ones that will be doing the reaching out to the 316 community. 317 318 Commissioner Hassan thought if the City staff was goingto be the ones doing the 319 reaching out then the staff needed to find out how the different races feel within the 320 community. He thought the questions are good and are not open ended, but the 321 people needed to be reached out to. 322 323 Ms. Olson thought the purpose of the staff survey was to find out what outreach and 324 engagement staff are currentlydoing, what staffistrying to do, and whether or not it 325 appeared successful in staff’s eyes. That way the Commission can decide if it is 326 really making the impact that staff thinks it is because the City needs to find that out 327 in the community. 328 329 Commissioner Hassan stated that was a good step because the questions themselves 330 are good, but he thought the community needs to be asked questions. He would like 331 to brainstorm with the community which should give the City a good idea of what is 332 missing and needs to be attained. 333 334 Commissioner Hassan stated the City could use the school students that come from 335 different communities as well to have their families fill out survey forms to get 336 feedback. He thought that would also give the Commission good feedback on what is 337 still needed in the community for outreach. 338 339 Commissioner Eck asked the Commission to flush out the primary goals of this work, 340 if it has not already been done. What does the Commission want to accomplish. 341 What are the questions the Commission wants to answer as a result of this work and 342 then dedicate some time to discuss. She thought that would allow the Commission to 343 be a little more strategic to zone in and getting specific information which can help 344 drive some of the activities that Commission Hassan has suggested in his memo. 345 346 Commissioner Djevi stated the Commission has separated the work into two different 347 parts based on the models of community engagement where a city government or a 348 government of any kind has its own goals to reach. He noted the City cannot go to 349 the community and have the community follow the City without a reason. He stated 350 the Commission also needs to ask for input. The point that the Commission is trying 351 to find out what has been done by the City that should be done differently is 352 important. The second part of this is to reach out to the Community. The 353 Commission will then identify who needs to be reached out to in order to find out 354 how the community views engagement and how the community would like that to 355 work and then combine the two pieces to make a recommendation as far as a 356 guideline for the City to follow. Once the model is done, it will be in place going 357 forward. He thought Commissioner Hassan was making a really good point. 358
