Roseville Human Rights, Inclusion and Engagement
Commission
Agenda Item
DATE:May 15, 2019ITEM:8C.
ITEM DESCRIPTION:Discussion on Youth Commissioner Recruitment
Background
The Human Rights, Inclusion and Engagement Commission currently has two youth members
who will be transitioning off the commission at the end of their terms (7/31/2019). At the April
meeting, commissioners discussed the recruitment process for youth commissioners. As part of
that, a draft position description for youth commissioners has been developed along with
additional marketing materials that can be used for recruitment.
Typically, the city will recruit youth commissioners through the traditional communication
channels which include:
o Social Media (Facebook, Twitter, NextDoor)
o Website
o E-Newsletters
In addition, we rely on word of mouth from both the outgoing youth commissioners, as well as
other HRIEC commissioners. Staff reaches out to past essay contest participants and sends
letters to schools and teachers. Since the youth commissioner term runs concurrently with the
school year, it is important that recruitment begin before the summer vacation when students
are not in school.
Recommendation
Discuss the role of the youth commissioners, including what topics or areas of interest the
commission would like future youth commissioners to undertake or focus on and any additional
methods of recruitment the commission desires.
Attachments
A:Youth Commissioner job description
B:Flyer
