Roseville Human Rights, Inclusion and Engagement
Commission
Agenda Item
DATE:May 15, 2019ITEM:8D
ITEM DESCRIPTION:Discuss 2019-20 Essay Contest
Background
In the past, the Human Rights Commission sponsored an Essay Contest for middle school
students. A brief outline of the process is included below. In order to get the information to
teachers in a timely manner, it is important that the Commission decide on and select a
question to be used in this contest. At this meeting, the Commission is being asked to
brainstorm topics for the 2019-2020 Essay contest. In June, the Commission will decide on a
topic, and in July brainstorm essay questions for that topic with the intent to finalize the
question in August.
Process:
Commission selects a question for the essay contest
1.Staff establishes a timeline that allows
a) Time to get essays to the teachers;
b) Time for staff to collect and copy essays;
c) Time for commissioners to review essays.
2.Prepare a packet that is sent to principals of the public and private schools in the
Roseville Area School District. It includes the essay question, deadline to complete
essay, contest rules, and entry form. This is sent as close to the beginning of the school
year as possible (end of August).
3.Submit an article about the essay contest to the local media. Post at City Hall and put on
the website.
4.Once essays are collected, they are numbered and copied, removing any information
identifying the student. Essays are divided among commissioners, and are rated based
on a rubric. Winners are chosen.
5.Letters are sent to winning students, principals and teachers. Students and families are
invited to the City Council meeting and brief reception.
6.Winning essays are posted on the website.
Attachments:A:2019-2020 Timeline
1
