Unless approved through the certificate of occupancy, cooking shall 1089 not be permitted in any rooming unit or dormitory unit, and a cooking facility or 1090 appliance shall not be permitted to be present in a rooming unit or dormitory unit. 1091 Exceptions: 1092 a. Where specifically approved in writing by the code official. 1093 b.Devices including, but not limited to, coffee pots and microwave ovens shall not be 1094 considered cooking appliances. 1095 4. Process ventilation. Where injurious, toxic, irritating or noxious fumes, gases, dusts or 1096 mists are generated, a local exhaust ventilation system shall be provided to remove the 1097 contaminating agent at the source. Air shall be exhausted to the exterior and not be re- 1098 circulated to any space. 1099 5. Clothes dryer exhaust. Clothes dryer exhaust systems shall be independent of all 1100 other systems and shall be exhausted in accordance with the manufacturer’s 1101 instructions. 1102 D. Occupancy Limitations 1103 1.Privacy.Dwelling units, hotel units, housekeeping units, rooming units and dormitory 1104 units shall be arranged to provide privacy and be separate from other adjoiningspaces. 1105 2. Minimum room widths.A habitable room, other than a kitchen, shall not be less than 1106 7 feet (2134 mm) in any plan dimension. Kitchens shall have a clear passageway of not 1107 less than 3 feet (914 mm) between counterfronts and appliances or counterfronts and 1108 walls. 1109 3. Minimum ceiling heights. Habitable spaces, hallways, corridors, laundry areas, 1110 bathrooms, toilet rooms and habitable basement areas shall have a clear ceiling height of 1111 not less than 7 feet (2134 mm). 1112 Exceptions: 1113 a. 1. In one-and two-family dwellings, beams or girders spaced not less than 4 1114 feet (1219 mm) on center and projecting not more than 6 inches (152 mm) 1115 below the required ceiling height. 1116 b. 2. Basement rooms in one-and two-family dwellings occupied exclusively for 1117 laundry, study or recreation purposes, having a ceiling height of not less than 6 1118 feet 8 inches (2033 mm) with not less than 6 feet 4 inches (1932 mm) of clear 1119 height under beams, girders, ducts and similarobstructions. 1120 c. 3. Rooms occupied exclusively for sleeping, study or similar purposes and 1121 having a sloped ceiling over all or part of the room, with a clear ceiling height of 1122 at least 7 feet (2134 mm) over not less than one-third of the required minimum 1123 floor area. In calculating the floor area of such rooms, only those portions of the 1124 floor area with a clear ceiling height of 5 feet (1524 mm) or more shall be 1125 included. 1126 4. Bedroom Sleeping and livingroom requirements.Every bedroom sleeping and 1127 living room shall comply with the requirements of Sections 906.06.D.4.a. through 1128 906.06.D.4.e. 1129 a. Area for sleeping purposes Room area. Every bedroomsleeping roomoccupied by 1130 one person shall contain at least not less than 70 square feet (6.5 m2) of floor area, 1131 and every bedroomsleeping room occupied by more than one person shall 1132 contain at leastnot less than 50 square feet (4.6 m2)of floor area for each occupant 1133 thereof.
