ATTACHMENT C <br />1658 Exceptions: <br />1659 1.Wherethecodethatwasineffectatthetimeof construction required smoke alarms and smoke <br />1660 alarms complying with those requirements are alreadyprovided. <br />1661 2. Where smoke alarms have been installed in occupancies and dwellings that were not required to <br />1662 have them at the time of construction, additional smoke alarms shall not be required provided that <br />1663 the existing smoke alarms comply with requirements that were in effect at the time of <br />1664 installation. <br />1665 3.Wheresmokedetectorsconnectedtoafirealarm system have been installed as a substitute for <br />1666 smoke alarms. <br />1667 c.Group R-1.Single-or multiple-station smoke alarms shall be installed in all of the <br />1668 following locations in Group R-1: <br />1669 1. In sleeping areas. <br />1670 2.Ineveryroominthepathofthe meansofegress fromthesleepingareatothedoorleadingfrom <br />1671 the sleeping unit. <br />1672 3. In each story within the sleeping unit, including basements. For sleeping units with split levels <br />1673 and without an intervening door between the adjacent levels, a smoke alarm installed on the <br />1674 upper level shall suffice for the adjacent lower level provided that the lower level is less than one <br />1675 full story below the upper level. <br />1676 d. Groups R-2, R-3, R-4 and I-1.Single- or multiple-station smoke alarms shall be installed and <br />1677 maintained in Groups R-2, R-3, R-4 and I-1 regardless of occupant load at all of the following <br />1678 locations: <br />1679 1. On the ceiling or wall outside of each separate sleeping area in the immediate vicinity of bed- <br />1680 rooms. <br />1681 2. In each room used for sleeping purposes. <br />1682 3. In each story within a dwelling unit, including basements but not including crawl spaces and <br />1683 uninhabitable attics. In dwellings or dwelling units with split levels and without an intervening <br />1684 door between the adjacent levels, a smoke alarm installed on the upper level shall suffice for the <br />1685 adjacent lower level provided that the lower levelis less than one full story below the upper level. <br />1686 e. Installation near cooking appliances.Smoke alarms shall not be installed in the <br />1687 following locations unless this would prevent placement of a smoke alarm in a <br />1688 required location. <br />1689 1. Ionization smoke alarms shall not be installed less than 20 feet (6096 m) horizontally <br />1690 from a permanently installed cooking appliance. <br />1691 2. Ionization smoke alarms with an alarm-silencing switch shall not be installed less <br />1692 than 10 feet (3048 mm) horizontally from a permanently installed cooking <br />1693 appliance. <br />1694 3. Photoelectric smoke alarms shall not be installed less than 6 feet (1829 mm) <br />1695 horizontally from a permanently installed cooking appliance. <br />1696 4. Ionization smoke alarms shall not be installed less than 20 feet (6096 m) <br />1697 horizontally from a permanently installed cooking appliance. <br />1698 5.
