ATTACHMENT C <br />1708 occupancies, Ssingle-station smoke alarms shall receive their primary power from the <br />1709 building wiring provided that such wiring is served from a commercial source and shall <br />1710 be equipped with a battery backup. Smokealarmswithintegralstrobesthatarenotequipped <br />1711 with battery backup shall be connected to an emergency electrical system. Smoke alarms shall <br />1712 emit a signal when the batteries are low. Wiring shall be permanent and without a <br />1713 disconnecting switch other than as required for overcurrent protection. <br />1714 Exceptions: <br />1715 1. Smoke alarms are permitted to be solely battery operated in buildings where no <br />1716 construction is nottaking place,. <br />1717 2. Smoke alarms are permitted to be solely battery operated in buildingsthat are <br />1718 not served from a commercial power source. <br />1719 3. Smoke alarms are permitted to be solely battery operated and in existing areas <br />1720 of buildings undergoing alterations or repairs that do not result in the removal of <br />1721 interior wall or ceiling finishes exposing the structure, unless there is an attic, <br />1722 crawl space or basement available which could provide access for building <br />1723 wiring without the removal of interior finishes. <br />1724 10. Interconnection. Where more than one smoke alarm is required to be installed within an <br />1725 individual dwelling or sleepingunit, in Group R-2, R-3, R-4 and in dwellings not <br />1726 regulated as Group R occupancies, the smoke alarms shall be interconnected in such a <br />1727 manner that the activation of one alarm will activate all of the alarms in the individual <br />1728 unit. Physical interconnection of smoke alarms shall not be required where listed wireless <br />1729 alarms are installed and all alarms sound upon activation of one alarm. The alarmshall <br />1730 be clearly audible in all bedrooms over background noise levels with all intervening <br />1731 doors closed. <br />1732 Exceptions: <br />1733 a. Interconnection is not required in buildings which are not undergoing alterations, <br />1734 repairs, or construction of anykind. <br />1735 b. Smoke alarms in existing areas are not required to be interconnected where alterations <br />1736 or repairs do not result in the removal of interior wall or ceiling finishes exposing the <br />1737 structure, unless there is an attic, crawl space or basement available which could provide <br />1738 access for interconnection without the removal of interiorfinishes. <br />1739 11. Smoke Detection System.Smoke detectors listed in accordance with UL 268 and provided as <br />1740 part of the building's fire alarm system shall be an acceptable alternative to single- and multiple- <br />1741 station smoke alarms and shall comply with the following provisions of the Minnesota State Fire <br />1742 Code: <br />1743 a. The fire alarm system shall comply with all applicable requirements of the <br />1744 Minnesota State Fire Code. <br />1745 b.Activation of a smoke detector in a dwelling or sleeping unit shall initiate alarm notification <br />1746 in the dwelling or sleeping unit. <br />1747 c. Activation of a smoke detector in a dwelling or sleeping unit shall not activate alarm <br />1748 notification appliances outside of the dwelling or sleeping unit, provided that a supervisory <br />1749 signal is generated and monitored. <br />1750 12. Testing And Maintenance.Single and multiple-station smoke alarms shall be tested and <br />1751 maintained in accordance with the manufacturer's instructions.
