goal of getting to 100% renewable resources for City operations. By installing solar panels on its
three main municipal buildings, Roseville has successfully produced 58% of its City campus
energy from renewable sources as of 2020.
Through their solar initiatives, Roseville has improved the general quality of a city
service through their adoption of increased renewable energy production. By installing solar
systems on three City buildings, Roseville's campus has achieved increased energy efficiency
and a reduction in greenhouse gas emissions from building energy consumption.
Roseville's solar initiatives also touch on developing an effective and innovative way to
solve an old or common challenge by making the permitting process for solar systems easier.
Getting permits is often a cumbersome and challenging process, and the easement of the
permitting process solves this issue. Additionally, the solar initiatives work towards the reduction
of greenhouse gas, which is the greatest source of emissions coming from building energy
consumption, making up 33% of electricity emissions.
In terms of financial benefit to the City, the increased solar initiatives alleviate the staff
time and money spent on reviewing solar permits within the City. This increased efficiency saves
time and ability for residents and commercial entities implementing solar systems.
Additionally, Roseville's solar initiatives have significantly involved city residents in its
development and implementation. The solar systems and adoption of Community Solar Gardens
was brought to the Public Works Commission where these items received substantial input from
residents and citizen groups within Roseville. Resilient Roseville, a group from the League of
Minnesota Women Voters, was a strong voice in this process. Overall, there was a large
contingency of groups and residents that expressed interest in solar and GHG reduction.
Lastly, these solar initiatives have provided leadership in local and regional collaborative.
Roseville staff have given tours of their solar installations to local businesses and outside cities
and counties. By achieving SolSmart Gold status, Roseville is recognized leader in being "open
for solar business" and can be a successful example for surrounding communities.
3) If appropriate, please include any relevant supporting documents (reports, proposals,
photos, brochures, maps, newsletters, newspaper clips, charts, graphs, etc.).
Below are relevant materials for the solar initiatives.
Roseville invests in solar power at its City Hall, fire station
By Shannon Prather Star Tribune
April 19, 2019 8:18pm
Roseville leaders will flip a switch Monday to energize more than 200 new solar panels mounted
on City Hall and the fire station.
The rooftop solar arrays, invisible to passersby, are expected to lower the city's utility bills and
reduce its greenhouse gas emissions by much as 55 tons a year.
