SUSTAINABILITY UPDATE 2020
GREEN STEP CITIES
Roseville has been a participating member of
the GreenStep Cities Program for the Minnesota
Pollution Control Agency since 2012, a voluntary
5-step challenge to help cities achieve
sustainability and quality of life goals. In early
2019, the city completed the remaining practices
necessary to achieve Step 3 status. The city is
currently working to achieve Step 4, improving
13 more practices including increasing the num-
ber of trees planted, evaluating the methods of
transportation for city residents and employees,
calculating the energy consumed by the city,
increasing the number of solar energy systems:
public and private, calculating miles of pathway,
among others.
The goals of Steps 4 and 5 are to gather data
in order to inform sustainable decisions in the
following years. Only 12 cities have achieved
Step 5 status this year. Step 5 of the program is a
renewable metric that is only achieved upon
additional improvements from year to year.
Roseville hopes to soon join the prestigious and
ambitious cities leading the state on resiliency,
efficiency, and sustainability. Much of
the committee's work focuses on the implementation
sustainability practices which meet the city's
sustainability goals. The Green team is working with
the Public Works department staff, such as the
environmental specialist, identifying electrifying the
city fleet and increasing solar systems in the city as
opportunities for growth in the near future.
CITY HALL CAMPUS
SOLAR INSTALLATION
Roseville completed the installation of the third
solar array on the City Hall campus this summer
(2019). Solar systems on the Fire Station, Mainte-
nance building, and City Hall have been installed and
are functioning. The panels have an estimated savings
in energy of $1,366 in the first year alone, and encour-
age the use of renewable energy to limit the use and
impact of fossil fuels and Greenhouse Gas Emissions
in the city and on the environment. Roseville will con-
tinue to promote the implementation of renewable
energy sources throughout the city.
3
