REQUEST FOR COUNCIL ACTION
Date: March 7, 2022
Item No.: 7.a
Department Approval City Manager Approval
Item Description:35W North Gateway Study Presentation
1 B ACKGROUND
2 The Minnesota Department of Transportation has been working on a high-level study and
3 preliminary concept design for 35W between County Road C and Park Avenue, south of downtown
4 Minneapolis. This future project would complete the reconstruction of 35W within the 494/694 ring
5 road and pick up where the recently completed 35W reconstruction project left off in Roseville.
7 The purpose of the I-35W North Gateway project is to develop a long-term solution for all people
8 who use that stretch of freeway. The study is assessing the condition of bridges, pavement and
9 interchanges. The study is also gathering input from nearby communities on their needs related to
10 transportation and safety. The goal of the study is to identify future construction projects along the
11 freeway.
12 MnDOT has been working with community partners since early 2019 on this study. As was the case
13 with many other projects and studies, COVID did have an impact on the schedule and engagement
14 efforts. There has been significant analysis and review of the corridor and how to incorporate
15 managed lanes into the final design of the roadway.
