Process (Agreed to on October 4)
Today: Reduce list to an acceptable number of “finalists” to be reviewed, thought about and
analyzed between now and your next meeting in December
December 6: Tentatively plan to reach a name recommendation
o Additional comment invited
o Discussion/motion
Early 2023: Recommendation to City Council

Staff reviewed additional items to consider as part of the naming process, such as: naming criteria,
Roseville’s Racial Equity Narrative and Equity toolkit, interpretive signage, and further engagement.
Anders Lenhart, 468 Woodruff Ave.
Relayed that he felt the name should be short but memorable. He stated that he liked Keya (turtle)or
woda¶ota (peace) as they are memorable and represent the Dakota nation. Friendship Park,
translated into the Dakota language, was an honorable mention for him as well.

Quinn Plain, 2498 Albert St.
Feels the name should be Friendship Park (translated into the Dakota language) as many people have
made friendship connections at that park.
Kathy Ramundt, 1161 Laurie Rd. W.
Gave a sincere thank you to the Commission for all of the work they have done on the renaming of
Pocahontas Park. She noted that the Commission demonstrated a commitment to being an inclusive
community by reaching out beyond past community engagement efforts. She is confident that this
project will be used as a model for future engagement efforts. It is her hope that the Commission will
recommend a Dakota name as it will facilitate education and conversations. She asked that the
Commission not consider a Dakota name with an English translation as she feels it is respectful for
people to learn a name in another language.
Commissioner Lenhart suggested having a final list of five name suggestions. She also relayed that a
shorter name may be a good attribute for a park name. She like Koda Park (friendship), Keya (turtle)
or woda¶ota (peace) as potential name options.
Commissioner Matts-Benson shared that the name suggestions may not be an exact translation. She
suggested choosing an “idea” for the park name and then confirming the translation.

Chair Dahlstrom added that the name suggestions would be vetted by Dakota speakers to ensure they
are the correct translation.

3
