Roseville Public Works, Environment and Transportation Commission
Agenda Item
DATE: October 24, 2023 ITEM: 7.a.
ITEM DESCRIPTION: TH 36 Update
Background
The Minnesota Department of Transportation (MnDOT) is looking ahead to the future of Hwy 36 in Roseville,
Little Canada, and Maplewood. The 8-mile segment of Highway 36, from Cleveland Avenue/135-W in
Roseville, to just east of English Street in Maplewood, and the roads that cross Highway 36, are the subject
of the Highway 36 Transportation Study. Roseville staff has been engaged in the process and serve on the
Project Management Team. The Study is broken into three phases:
Phase 1: Purpose and Need (February 2023 — September 2023)
Phase 2: Alternatives Evaluation (September 2023 — February 2024)
Phase 3: Study Document (February 2024 — April 2024)
Phase 1 of the Study is complete and had the following goals:
Gain an understanding of the current conditions of Hwy 36 and begin to evaluate those conditions
against long-term transportation goals for the cities, county and state.
Develop a deep, holistic understanding of the transportation needs of people who live and travel within
and through the study area. Provide people the opportunity to share their vision and ideas for future
improvements that could meet those needs.
Examine how technical analyses and public input line up to reveal key areas where needs and concerns
are compounded.
MnDOT's Project Manager for this study, David Elvin, presented information about the study to the City
Council at their October 18, 2023 work session. City staff will give a brief overview of that presentation.
Attached is a map of the study corridor and the presentation slides. More information can also be found on
the project website: www.dot.state.mn.us/metro/projects/hwy36maplewood-rosevilie.
Recommendation
Receive report and provide feedback.
Attachments
1.
