Motel 6 has come a long way from its <br />modest -oots ... only the prices continue to remind travelers of the "old <br />days!" <br />To a large extent, the secret which enables Motel 6 to develop a qual- <br />ity product for a modest price is standardization. All of the motels are <br />built to basically the same plan. Thus, there are savings in design costs, <br />construction charges and furnishings. There are only two kinds of rooms: <br />those with one or two beds. The rooms are otherwise identical. <br />This means that room cleaning is easy and staff training is simple. <br />Bathrooms have showers with rounded, not sharp edges, and no tubs --- again <br />easy to clean. All Motel 6 locations have their own laundry so there is never <br />a shortage of fluffy towels and costs can be controlled. All supplies are <br />ordered centrally. <br />Management of individual Motel 6 properties is generally handled by <br />a couple who live on -site. One is the general manager and the other, the <br />front office manager. Real hands-on management. <br />Another factor which makes Motel 6 unique is the fact that ALL of its <br />properties are company -operated. There are no franchises. Thus, Motel 6 <br />has direct, immediate control which no franchise operation can match. This <br />makes the company much more flexible. Decisions can be made quickly. <br />Who uses Motel 6? A large base of loyal followers. All told, more <br />than 20 million guest stayed at Motel 6 during 1986. They told the company <br />in countless letters that they liked its low prices and clean rooms. Many <br />make it a practice to use the Motel 6 directory and national reservations <br />service, and stay in Motel 6 rooms all across the country. <br />Among the key groups of users are seniors, those 50 and above, who can <br />afford more, but prefer to spend their money on other things and who have the <br />time to travel more often.
