f
1
J
FML, Inc.
STS Project 93589
August 28, 1985
-13-
We recommend that no foundation concrete be placed in standing
water or on soils loosened or softened by construction traffic.
Rather, ground water seepage or rainwater accumulation as well as
any softened soils should be removed prior to foundation placement.
Total settlement of the foundations placed as above should be 3/4
inch or less with differential settlement on the order of one half
of this amount.
3. Drainage Recommendations
If the existing fi11, or imported silty or clayey fill soils are
used in the berm areas surrounding the lower level walls, we
recimmend that a perimeter drain system be provided to minimize the
collection of seepage water of garage walls. The perimeter drain
should be placed around the outside of the structure and above
footing level and should consist of $ perforated or slotte 4 plastic
pipe connected to a sump pit or drain into an area of lower eleva-
tion. The plastic pipe should be surrounded by a free -draining
granular soil and wrapped with a non -woven filter fabric to
minimize migration of fines into the drain which could clog the
system. All garage walls should be dampproofed. The final 12 to
18 inches of fill at grade should be a clayey soil properly com-
pacted and slopedw
away from the basement walls to promote drainage
away from the structure. In areas where the naturally -occurring
relatively clean sandy soils are to be used for berming against
foundation walls, and below foundations, a perimeter drain system
would not be necessary: however, the walls should be dam roofs
p,P d ,
4:Floor Slab Design
Floor slabs based on properly placed and compacted fill can be
laced zs - -
p previously discussed. The floor slabs should be isolated
from foundation walls to allow for any minor differential movement
between the two. We recommend that a minimum
4-inch thick granular
layer be placed beneath the floor slab as a leveling course and to
provide a capillary moisture break between the floor slab and
underlying soil.
