FIRE PREVENTION ACTIVITIES:
Fire prevention activities in Roseville are conducted by a full
time Fire Marshal and part time Deputy Fire Marshals (equivalent
to half time position). Most of the Fire Marshal' activities''are
directed at new construction, remodeling', plan review, and
complaints. At the present time there is no on -going inspection
program of existing occupancies.
The City of Roseville has adopted the 1982 edition of. the
Minnesota Uniform Fire Code (MUFC). In addition, some local
amendments have been promulgated in the interest of fire safety.
The MUFC authorizes (and in many cases requires) inspection. of
existing structures and occupancies. Among the types of
occupancies to be inspected are multiple residential structures
with four or more units (apartment buildings). Single family
dwellings and townhouses traditionally do not require inspections
by fire prevention personnel.
The MUFC requires fire alarm systems in apartment buildings three
or more stories in height or in buildings with sixteen or more;
apartment units. The Minnesota Uniform Building Code (MUBC), and
the MUFC require the installation of automatic sprinkler
protection only in the larger buildings that are built of
combustible construction. The MUBC does contain an amendment for
local adoption which is more stringent and mandates automatic
sprinkler protection for smaller apartment buildings. At this
time Roseville has not adopted this amendment.
