Page 9 - #120-10689
The elevation of 5000 psf bearing soils is substantially below
estimated bottom of footing elevation at several boring locations. In
these areas, it is our judgment it would be best to construct the
foundations at normal depth below the lower floor slab after placement
of a compacted fill.
In addition to the required depth of fill, the excavated area must be
oversized to provide suitable lateral support. In areas where swamp
deposits are not encountered during the excavating we recommend an
oversize beyond the planned edge of footing equal to 2' plus 1' for
each foot of compacted fill that will be required below the footing at
that location. In areas where swamp deposits are encountered, we
recommend the excavation be oversized from the planned outside edge of
footing a distance equal to at least 2' plus 1 1/2' times the depth of
fill required below the footing at that location.
Groundwater may be encountered during the excavating in some portions
of the site. Dewatering will therefore be required to provide a
relatively dry excavation for proper observation of the exposed soils
and also placement of the compacted fill. If the excavated area is
relatively wet, we recommend the initial few feet of compacted fill be
a relatively clean granular soil with less than 5% passing the #200
sieve. The remainder of the fill should also be granular, perferably
with less than 10% passing the #200 sieve. We recommend all fill
placed below planned bottom of footing elevation be compacted to a
SOIL exPLOfaB r1
